The ABC Model from Albert Ellis
Albert Ellis’s ABC model explains how a triggering event activates very individual beliefs (so-called automatic thoughts) in all of us, which in turn lead to an individual consequence. Thus, one and the same situation can lead to different feelings and behaviors in different people due to their evaluation mechanisms.
Understanding this is a very important basis for cognitive restructuring, which is indicated for many disorders and problems. Patients and clients often find this difficult at first, because the individually experienced consequence is perceived as totally logical and conclusive. “But if someone treats you like that, you’ll be annoyed too, won’t you?” I’m sure you’ve heard that one before!
In order to make it easier to start with cognitive restructuring, these worksheets are a detailed set of therapy tools, in which the ABC model has been summarized so it can be worked through together with examples and exercise suggestions.
And once you have worked through the ABC model, why not add Cognitive Distortions (from Beck) as this would be a useful addition for your patients and clients.
This therapy tool is also included in the English Worksheets Mega Bundle which includes all English worksheets in one download at a 10% rebate.
